Galway farmer, Michael Burke has developed a revolutionary wool pillow. This pillow is completely organic, hypo-allergenic, and chemical-free. It's natural wool fibres are covered in high-quality cotton. It’s called the Woolow.
1. It’s An Irish Company
Michael lives on his family farm where sheep have been raised for more than 200 years. As a child he helped tend to the flock, which included shearing them when the time came.
“And my dad took some of the wool from the sheep that I sheared and made a pillow out of it,” he recalls “That was the best pillow I ever had. It was just the right amount of support, and because it’s a natural fibre it regulates temperature. I didn’t realise all that back then, I just loved that pillow.” The Woolow is manufactured in Ireland using just two ingredients – Wool and 300 thread count Fairtrade cotton.
2. It's Hypo Allergenic
Each Woolow pillow is filled with natural hypo-allergenic wool with a 300 thread count Fairtrade cotton casing. Scientific testing has demonstrated that dust mites cannot survive in wool, which is why natural wool has been internationally awarded Allergy Seal of Approval.
3. It’s Organic
Michael converted the farm to being completely organic. He’s passionate about biodiversity, renewable resources, living chemical-free and focusing on things that are recyclable. The Woolow ticks all those boxes. We all sleep on pillows every night – but few people realise that most of them are synthetic, made of cheap and disposable chemical-based materials. This obviously has an environmental cost in that they will end up in landfill, but there is also a cost to human health as respiratory issues can arise from dust mites thriving in those synthetic fibres.
4. It Will Help You Sleep Better
Sheep’s wool is a natural fibre designed to breathe, meaning it adjusts to your body temperature to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. It even regulates your body temperature, so you won’t overheat or get cold during the night.

“We spend more than a third of our lives in bed, so investing in a good night’s sleep is vital” says Michael Burke.
5. It’s Luxurious
The Woolow pillows have a medium firmness, but it differs to a down pillow in that it offers more neck support.
6. It's Suitable For All Seasons
Forget changing your pillow every season, the Woolow pillow is suitable for the heatwaves or when the heating is on as wool has the thermal benefits of down or feather. Wool is also the most breathable fibre on the planet and it doesn’t attract dirt. These qualities allied to its natural temperature regulating benefits, set wool apart from other pillow fibres and ensure a natural & deeper night’s sleep every night.
7. It's Sustainable
Wool is a natural, sustainable, plentiful resource. Until recently, it made the clothes we wore and the bedding we slept in. Plastic, disposable fleece fabric changed that, we need to go back to natural fibres for the sake of our planet and for our health.
The Woolow is not a throwaway, ‘fast fashion’ product. It has a lifespan of 6 years after which time the wool and the cotton can be recycled into other durable forms of textiles (clothes and insulation). This is the essence of our Woolow circular economy.
The carbon in wool is derived from carbon from the pasture, and thus is sequestered from the current atmosphere. Wool is produced in pasture systems when the diet is dominated by grasses and herbs. These plants convert CO2 from the atmosphere into organic compounds using light energy – as part of the photosynthesis process which underpins most life on earth. So, when you buy something made of wool, you are purchasing carbon sequestered from the atmosphere 1-2 years earlier. According to the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO), 1 kg of wool equates to 1.8kg of CO2 stored in a durable, usable form.
8. It's Dust Free
Wool is clinically proven to prevent germs and allergens, making it a must-have for those with hay-fever or dust allergies. Decades working in the pharmaceutical industry taught Michael about the science behind sleeping on wool, so he decided to make the pillows available for everyone. Dust mites – which are responsible for so many allergies and respiratory problems, can’t survive in cleaned, carded wool.
9. It Has Multiple Options
The Woolow pillow comes in two options Lavender and Natural. It is mould, mildew & dust mite resistant and a standard pillow size 48cm x 74cm (19″ x 29″) so will fit most standard pillow cases. The pillows are €50 each.
If you prefer a pillow with no scent the Natural option is for you. While the Lavender pillow is gently infused with the scent of lavender to aid restful sleep. It is not strewn with the herb, simply infused. The scent is not overpowering.
