Curly Hair Tips & Tricks: How to care for your curly hair
If you’re someone that has naturally curly hair, then you know the struggle of trying to care for curly hair – keeping it frizz-free, hydrated, and glossy looking can be a challenge.
Curls can be unpredictable and difficult to control, and there are days when having wild curls feels less than enviable. Once you find a routine that works for you and your curly hair, you’ll have soft, bouncy curls day after day.
Follow our tips and tricks to help make caring for your curly hair a little bit easier.
- Don’t Over Wash
Curly hair is different from other hair textures, it is naturally dry and prone to frizz, that's why it requires more hydration and less washing. Over-washing can strip the hair of its natural oils, making it dry and more difficult to maintain. Shampooing less often can help your curls retain more moisture, stay softer, smoother, and healthier. When washing your hair, it’s important to use a shampoo designed for curls, like John Frieda’s Frizz Ease Dream Curls Shampoo and follow with John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream Curls Conditioner these are expertly designed for curly hair types and suitable for all levels of frizz.
- Always comb your hair from the bottom up
Detangling hair from the bottom up allows you to gently detangle each knot, rather than compounding knots toward the bottom and trying to pull your way through all the knots at once. To protect hair from damage and to detangle efficiently, we advise you use a detangling spray, like Revlon UniqOne™ Hair Treatment, to help soften the knots and use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush to comb through curly hair. Why not try The Belle Brush The Original.
- Start Styling Hair When It’s Still Damp
There are many different styling products for curly hair types, from oils to sprays and mousses. It is important that you find the product that works best for your hair. We recommend John Frieda Dream Curls Creme Oil, as it contains curl-enhancing technology and rosehip oil, which will help nourish and retain moisture to your hair, while defining curls.
Once you find a styling product that you are happy with, it can help applying your favourite curly hair styling product to the hair while it is still damp. The combination of the product plus the hair being wet ensures that curls stay frizz-free. To speed up the drying process without adding frizz, set your hair dryer to the lowest setting, and attach a diffuser. Let your curls rest gently on the nozzle of the diffuser and continue to separate and scrunch each curl as they dry. Using a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer can really help even out your curl pattern and boost the volume of heavy curls, giving more body to your hair.
