Established over 150 years ago, Shaws has become a trusted, much-loved brand and one of Ireland’s leading department store retailers. An Irish family-owned business to this day, we enjoy a rich heritage that is steeped in tradition. Our goal is to provide quality products, unmatched service and expert knowledge for all our customers nationwide. We’ve achieved these goals in-store and now our aim is to offer everything you’ve come to expect in-store, online.
Our HistoryFounded in 1864 by Henry Shaw, the company began as a small drapery shop in Mountmellick, Co. Laois. From these humble beginnings, under the guidance of Henry and his wife, Annie, the business slowly grew. By the turn of the century, the company comprised of 2 premises, and was well-placed for further growth.
From the early to mid-20th century, with the astute management of William Henry Shaw and Samuel Shaw respectively, the company expanded across the midlands. 3 more stores opened in Athy, Waterford and Carlow. A period of rapid expansion across the following decades gave birth to the popular slogan ‘Shaws Almost Nationwide’. The most recent store opened by Shaws was on Austin Friars Street, Mullingar, in 2016.
Presently, Shaws operates 15 stores in the main provincial towns of Ireland and employs almost 1000 people. We remain a family-run business, with Jonathan Shaw the current CEO, while many other Shaw family members work in various positions throughout the company. As the company has grown, so too has the depth and range of the products we offer; expanding to now include Womenswear, Menswear, Childrenswear, Schoolwear, Footwear, Beauty, Electrical Appliances, Jewellery, Home Solutions, Gifting and more.
Being a service-led business, our people have always been vital to our success, with many dedicating their entire careers to Shaws. This loyalty, and their dedication to our customers, is a key factor in our long-standing success. Such commitment to our customers was recognised in 2020 when we were awarded the ‘Best Brand in Retail Sector’ in the CXi Ireland Customer Experience report.
Now, as we embark on launching our online store, we aim to replicate what customers have come to expect from us – excellence in brands, value, service and knowledge.
